Teacher(s): Lydia Stergiopoulou
This online course aims to introduce the participants to the technology of Remote Operated Vehicles and explore the relevance of the diverse ROVs with the objectives of the UW research that is part of the uBlueTec project. The first part explains the fundamentals of the ROVs, the history of their invention along with their technical evolution up to the present. It goes through the main and additional components of the most common ROVs today.
The second part of the training describes the diversity of their applications in 8 different fields, connected with the different technical features. It pays particular attention to the field of exploration and UW archaeology, going through the extra possibilities for autonomous mission organization and planning.
The third part proceeds to a basic overview of the surveying technics and the relative data collection, aspects of positioning and navigation and their applications in UW archaeology.
The main goal of the course, through its three modules, is to introduce the participants to the basics of that valuable UW technology, its benefits and the vast range of its applications.
N/A
The participants will acquire a broad introductory theoretical knowledge on components and functions of ROVs
That theoretical knowledge is a good starting point for further practical knowledge on piloting, controlling and navigating ROVs vehicles
The participants will be able to go through examples of ROVs applications and understand the benefits from their function depending on the goal.
Acquiring knowledge coming from that technological field is very important for experts and practitioners who will need to make decisions for their missions or participate in UW surveys and projects related to UW archaeology, oceanography and marine biology.
Related to life-long learning, participants will increase their understanding of the underwater technologies.
No prerequisites
Online e-learning course
Small tests will be created for each of the two modules to assess the level of knowledge and skills developed
This course is designed for professionals interested in understanding the fundamentals of ROVs, their designs, classifications and operations. It can become an extremely useful tool shedding light on the benefits and difficulties of that UW technology, offering a starting point for those interested to dive deeper into the practical knowledge of controlling ROVs and mission planning. The course’s flexible online format allows participants to learn at their own pace, making it an ideal choice for professionals with busy schedules or those looking to integrate lifelong learning into their routine.
This course contributes to SDG 14 (Life below water)
